Interest: Mild
I love the era of J-horror that inspired the original American version of The Grudge, but it feels like that time has passed. I’ll still see this, but I’m keeping my expectations as low as possible.
Official Synopsis
Directed by Nicolas Pesce, THE GRUDGE stars Andrea Riseborough, Demián Bichir, John Cho, Betty Gilpin with Lin Shaye and Jacki Weaver. With a screenplay by Nicolas Pesce and a story by Nicolas Pesce and Jeff Buhler, THE GRUDGE is based on the film “Ju-On: The Grudge” written and directed by Takashi Shimizu. Interest: Moderate
I don’t know of an underwater monster movie I didn’t like at least a little. Something about the sub-genre is just so interesting to me. Plus, the cast is solid, so I feel like this is going to be the first movie of 2020 that I really enjoy. At least, I hope it is.
Official Synopsis
UNDERWATER is a film that follows a crew of underwater researchers who must scramble to safety after an earthquake devastates their subterranean laboratory. Directed by William Eubank, UNDERWATER stars Kristen Stewart, T.J. Miller, Vincent Cassel and John Gallagher Jr..
Interest: Moderate
I love a good haunted house movie. I do think the creepy-little-kid motif is overdone, but since this is based on a book I can let it slide. I’ve become a fan of Mackenzie Davis over the last couple of years, so I’m looking forward to seeing her in this.
Official Synopsis
For more than 100 years, a deeply haunting tale has been passed down to terrify audiences. Next January, DreamWorks Pictures’ The Turning takes us to a mysterious estate in the Maine countryside, where newly appointed nanny Kate is charged with the care of two disturbed orphans, Flora and Miles. Quickly though, she discovers that both the children and the house are harboring dark secrets and things may not be as they appear.
Interest: Moderate
This looks real weird. Hopefully it’ll be playing somewhere close so I can see it in theaters, because I’m pretty sure I’m going to like it.
Official Synopsis
After a meteorite lands in the front yard of their farm, Nathan Gardner (Nicolas Cage) and his family find themselves battling a mutant extraterrestrial organism as it infects their minds and bodies, transforming their quiet rural life into a living nightmare.
Gretel & Hansel
January 31
Interest: Mild
This looks like it’s trying real hard to emulate/copy the style of The Witch. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, I just hope it turns out to have some worthwhile substance behind the already familiar visual style.
Official Synopsis
On January 31, witness the terrifying untold story of the classic tale. Sophia Lillis stars in Gretel & Hansel, coming to theaters everywhere.
